Senegal is mobilizing for a sustainable future: launch of the Long Term Vision 2050 project

Senegal is resolutely committed to the fight against climate change and sustainable development. To realize this commitment, the ministries of oil and energy, environment, sustainable development and ecological transition, in partnership with ENDA ENERGIE, officially launched the project “Development of the long-term vision 2050 (LTV) of Senegal and a roadmap for the operationalization of the long-term low-emission development strategy (LT-LEDS)" on August 8, 2023.

The Quest for a Long-Term Vision

Following the CoP 21 agreements, Senegal took the initiative to join the global fight against global warming. With this in mind, it has embarked on a crucial intermediate step: developing a Long-Term Vision for the year 2050. This ambitious vision aims to contribute to the objective of limiting global warming to below 2°C, or even 1.5°C, while strengthening adaptation and resilience to global climate challenges.

An LTV for a sustainable trajectory

The project aims to support the creation of a Long-Term Vision (LTV) document for Senegal that will serve as a guide for selecting the trajectories and actions necessary to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. This LTV is part of a low-carbon approach, thus contributing to carbon neutrality on a global scale and promoting resilience in the face of climate change.

A commitment to CoP28

Senegal has set itself a clear objective: to submit its Long Term Vision (LTV) and a roadmap at CoP28. These strategic tools will guide the country's investments and shape future Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Funding for this initiative is provided by the International Climate Initiative (IKI), in collaboration with the “2050 Pathways Platform” initiative.

A coherent vision

Senegal's LTV will be based on the orientations of strategic documents such as the Emerging Senegal Plan (PSE), the Nationally Determined Contribution (CDN), the Sustainable Development Strategy, the 2063 Agenda of the African Union, the climate projections by 2050, national sectoral policies, territorialization policies with local authorities, and contributions from non-state actors. This inclusive process aims to promote endogenous knowledge and innovations for a holistic approach.

Senegal is taking a giant step towards a sustainable future by launching the Long Term Vision 2050 project. This ambitious initiative demonstrates the country's desire to play an active role in the fight against climate change and to work towards a environmentally friendly development. The process of co-construction and alignment with existing strategies reflects Senegal's determination to create a prosperous and resilient future for future generations. Let's closely follow the progress of this innovative project which inspires the rest of the world to commit to a greener and more sustainable future.
