Milk value chain: Need for perfect organization to remove constraints


Nearly 200 players in the dairy sector from 25 countries gathered on June 12 and 13, 2019 in Dakar, for the 3rd edition of international meetings on milk, the theme of which was “Milk, a vector of development”. This third edition is organized by ISRA (Senegal), Cirad and INRA (France), with the support of FAO and Agreenium.

Working for several years for the resilience of agropastoralists, the Regional Milk and Solar Energy Value Chain Program (PROGRES-Lait), took part in these two days which made it possible to connect the actors and encourage the exchange of experiences around of the diversity of dairy development models.

Alongside the scientific conference, the “Innovations Fair” which encouraged the dissemination of innovations between different countries, allowed PROGRES-Lait representatives to interact with experts and field players without forgetting the promotion of Debbo yogurt produced by Tatki cooperatives (Northern Senegal)

The Secretary General of the Ministry of Livestock and Animal Production, Mamadou Ousseynou Sakho underlined during the symposium, “the need for perfect organization of all actors in the milk sector”, from producers to distributors including collectors. , to remove the constraints of the sector.

This edition, which focused on the role of women and the most modest breeders in these dairy dynamics, succeeded in mobilizing processing companies and public authorities to support the growth of local milk production in Africa. the West.

“The main ambition of this international symposium is to achieve better coordination of actions around milk and dairy products in Europe and in developing countries.” This included bringing about joint research, training or support projects for local communities, underlined Christian Corniaux of CIRAD, co-organizer of this international symposium.

The symposium also helped strengthen West African dairy producers as well as NGOs who are leading an advocacy campaign aimed at promoting local milk in the face of imports of cheap milk powder.
