Nearly 20 journalists were selected to participate in a training session on environmental and citizenship issues. This training, which was organized by Enda energie, made it possible to strengthen their level of immersion on issues related to the environment.

3 years after the implementation of the EIPC program which concerns 5 communes of the Petite Côte (Mbour, Saly, Ngaparou, somone, and Malicounda), it was a question of reviewing the achievements of this good governance program whose overall objective is to contribute to citizenship education for an ecological and economic transition in the Petite Côte intercommunal agreement (EIPC).

This training targeted journalists and community leaders who represent one of the preferred targets of the EIPC thanks to the role played by the media in raising awareness among the masses at the local level.

After the various opening speeches which provided an overview of the objectives of the training, the participants in turn expressed their expectations which boil down to acquiring knowledge that will help them better understand the environmental issues of the Petite Côte .

The training session began with a panel of experts involved in the implementation of the EIPC to allow participants to learn more about the activities carried out since the start of the program, the type of actors involved and their roles , among others that of artists and journalists who are key actors in raising awareness with a view to raising awareness.

For Mr. Secou Sarr Director of Enda Energie, it is also important to look back at the history of the project to understand the intercommunality in which the 5 municipalities of the EIPC are engaged, whose objective is to face climate challenges that they have in common. He also recalled the prospects of this intercommunity which remains open to other localities in the Mbour department.

It should be noted at the end of this panel that the small coast faces several environmental challenges but the major issues around which the EIPC focuses its interventions are garbage management and coastal erosion. All the activities implemented so far converge towards addressing these challenges. The intercommunity in which the 5 municipalities are engaged is a process which makes it possible to develop solidarity to better respond to the needs of the populations” according to Professor Boubacar Fall, specialist in the theme of adaptation to climate change.

Mr. Moustapha Sene, journalist in charge of the training, then carried out the different modules followed by exchanges and discussions for better appropriation of the concepts and immersion in the environmental theme and its contours in the context of the IEPC. To help journalists become aware of their commitment to communities while highlighting the social cultural aspects specific to the region because according to him, talking about environmental preservation means promoting a healthy living environment for all.

Throughout the discussions, it was a question of putting the journalist at a level of immersion allowing him to understand the complexity of this theme and understand the evolution of the debate on an international scale. For Mr. Sène, today Senegal benefits from infrastructure and an institutional framework allowing it to be part of the major discussions on the climate on an international scale. The journalist can use these skills to strengthen his thematic knowledge.

Journalistic techniques such as the “major investigation” format have been reviewed to help journalists refine their investigations so as not to limit themselves to the facts.

At the end of this training, which represents a stage of the immersion process, it was planned to maintain exchanges in order to create a platform to generate initiatives and strengthen knowledge linked to environment and citizenship in the context of the Intercommunal Agreement of the Little Coast.
