Djirnda – Clean cooking: an alternative to fight against excessive cutting of the mangrove

The degradation of natural resources is a serious problem in Senegal and in particular in island areas that are very vulnerable to the effects of climate change. This phenomenon, due to anthropogenic activities such as excessive cutting of the mangrove, does not spare the commune of Djirnda, located in the Fatick region.

To combat anarchic exploitation and excessive cutting of mangroves used as domestic fuel, Enda Energie offers women in the Municipality of Djirnda improved stoves as part of a 100% Clean Cooking initiative, a component of the “Support technique of the commune of Djirnda in the Saloum Islands in Senegal, for the experimental implementation of a sustainable artisanal fishing industry. This initiative consists of making improved stoves and butane gas accessible in this area.

For the proper implementation of this project in partnership with the Institut de la Francophonie pour le développement durable – IFDD, Enda Energie visited the villages of the commune to discuss with the various stakeholders on the supply system for these homes improved, more low-carbon.

The “Clean Cooking” initiative undertaken in the commune of Djirnda is in line with the desire of several households to have these stoves according to most of the shopkeepers met. It is seen by all stakeholders as a real alternative to combat excessive mangrove cutting.

Met on the Island of Diamniadio, the shopkeeper Lamine Sarr suggested the establishment in the locality of a gas depot managed by the women's cooperative. For him, Boutiques Energies will facilitate access to butane gas to fight against excessive cutting of the mangroves.

After the regeneration of more than 25 ha of mangrove, the development of beekeeping in 6 villages, the dissemination of improved smoking ovens and bakeries in the commune of Djirnda, the action of Enda Energie continues with this initiative which will allow to provide each household with clean cooking equipment ensuring high penetration of improved stoves and butane gas.
