Promotion of Socio-Ecological Resilience in Senegal through the Promotion of Improved Household Stoves
The implementation of the RESICOM project (Socio-ecological Resilience of Communities in Mangroves in Senegal), in partnership with Mitsubishi Corporation, allowed ENDA ENERGIE to organize a series of culinary demonstrations in Toubacouta (Fatick region) in the villages of the Bamboung Marine Protected Area with the aim of promoting the adoption of improved cookstoves. The objective of these culinary demonstrations is not only to raise awareness about climate change, but also to develop sustainable female entrepreneurship, in collaboration with women's groups from the five target villages of the commune of Toubacouta, notably Betenty, Bany, Bossincang, Missirah and Medina Sangakho.
The cooking demonstration is an awareness-raising activity, which consists of demonstrating the difference in terms of fuel consumption, cooking speed, convenience... between the traditional stove (e.g. "three stones") and the stove improved in use . It is accompanied by a talk which is a moment of discussion and exchange between the women and the project team. This activity is organized in the different villages of intervention of the Bamboung AMP and allows the population to take ownership of these improved stoves.
Each group benefited from a batch of improved stoves to launch into entrepreneurship within the village. These starter kits offered by Mitsubishi Corporation, including improved low carbon stoves, are not just a starting point, but are seen as catalysts for change by most beneficiaries. They facilitate access to sustainable technology while propelling these women's groups towards an innovative entrepreneurial approach.
These starter kits also propelled an economic and social transformation, supported by the innovative installation of “Jambar crates”.
These three-key boxes called “Jambar Boxes” add a dimension of transparency and security to the financial management of groups, thus symbolizing a commitment to responsibility and sustainability.
This project to improve the resilience of mangrove ecosystems and communities through the restoration and expansion of clean technologies in the Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) of Ufoyaal Kassa Bandial and Bamboung aims to restore the mangrove ecosystem and improve the livelihoods of local populations by planting 20 ha of mangroves and disseminating 1000 improved cooking stoves specific to local communities. The distribution of these improved stoves will be ensured by the women's groups benefiting from the start-up kit.
It is part of the partnership between MCFEA (The Mitsubishi Corporation Fund for Europe and Africa) and ENDA ENERGIE, started in 2023, and which is part of a dynamic aimed at improving the resilience of mangrove ecosystems and local communities through the restoration and popularization of clean technologies in the Ufoyaal Kassa Bandial and Bamboung Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). This first funding aims to restore 20 hectares of mangroves, while transforming local livelihoods through the dissemination of 1,000 improved cookstoves within the community.
