The little coast is adopting a program to accelerate the integrated management of climate resilience.

This Wednesday, June 22, 2022, on the occasion of the official launch of the Acceleration of Integrated Management of Climate Resilience program (AGIR - Petite Côte), a popular mobilization took place at the esplanade of the municipal stadium of Mbour with the all stakeholders in this project funded by the European Union. This climate resilience initiative is part of the implementation of the State of Senegal program on Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM).

Planned for a period of three years, the AGIR-Petite Côte program aims to improve the living conditions of local populations in the different communes of the Petite Côte.

Implemented by the ENDA ENERGIE, IPSIA and JVE Senegal consortium, this climate resilience program is structured around three pillars: (1) the inclusion of all territorial stakeholders in the governance of the natural resources of the small coast , (2) the strengthening of livelihoods for communities living from main coastal activities such as fishing, and (3) the development of green business ecosystems which will highlight the potential for job creation through the recovery of household waste.

This program “should allow garbage to be an economic component. Garbage is no longer waste but a means of creating income and jobs” explains Sécou SARR, director of ENDA ENERGIE. Moreover, this economic aspect of waste was the main theme developed by the theater troupes who helped communities to better understand the economic value of waste through a #MbalitKoomLa show. The popular launch of this program which took place in the form of “Nguel Climat” with maestro Diabi Ndong de Joal, also gave pride of place to the musical artists of the Petite Côte who had participated in the dedicated “Na Set” compilation. to environmental protection. AGIR-Petite Côte follows on from the good ecological governance program previously implemented in 5 communes of the Petite Côte, and is structured around several activities aimed at responding to the specific needs and constraints of the targeted communes.

The two (2) previous phases (GIZC in 2014 and EIPC in 2017) first made it possible to build the Intercommunality of the Petite Côte on two pillars of common interest (Waste management and coastal erosion) around the municipalities of Malicounda , Mbour, Ngaparou, Saly and Somone and then to roll out the agenda of adaptation and mitigation actions to deal with climate change. AGIR - Petite Côte is part of the continuity of these processes initiated by integrating 6 new municipalities of the Petite Côte (Bargny, Ngueniene, Yene, Popenguine, Sindia, Joal) thanks to financial support from the European Union.
