Mitigating the effects of climate change: Senegal adopts the Deep decarbonization pathways Initiative

The French Development Agency (Afd), in partnership with the government, is collaborating with the Institute of International Relations and Sustainable Development (Iddri) and Enda Energie for the implementation in Senegal of the Deep decarbonization pathways (Ddp) initiative ).
The memorandum of understanding governing the activities of this initiative should be signed jointly on Thursday, September 23, 2021, by the Minister of Oil and Energy, Sophie Gladima, the Minister of the Environment and Sustainable Development, Abdou Karim Sall, and the Director of the Afd in Dakar, Alexandre Pointier.
Funded by the Afd 2050 facility, the Ddp initiative relies on a leading research network which brings together 36 countries. It aims, according to a press release, to support states and non-state actors in defining strategies that will help guide economies and societies towards a carbon-neutral world by the second half of the century.
Senegal, due to its location in the Sahel and coastal zone, is among the countries considered to be very vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Thus, the country wanted the implementation of the Ddp initiative in order to initiate this strategic exercise of co-construction of low-carbon development trajectories that are resilient to climate change by 2050, based on a clear diagnosis strengths and challenges in the country.
By ratifying the Paris Agreement, the government of Senegal has committed not only to contributing to the collective effort to reduce greenhouse gases, but also to identifying the measures and actions necessary to adapt to current impacts. and futures of climate change.
“In this context, the challenge of the Ddp initiative is decisive since it involves identifying solutions allowing populations and economic actors to access the services necessary for the development of Senegal while controlling the increase in term of associated greenhouse gas emissions,” reports the press release. According to the same source, these solutions for 2050 will shed more light on the decisions that will be taken in the short term with regard to the impacts of climate change.
The management of the Ddp project in Senegal will be structured around a technical and research team in charge of overall coordination, five thematic groups which will work on the transformations of energy, agricultural and land use, urban systems. and infrastructure, and industrial. The third body is a strategic orientation committee co-chaired by the ministers in charge of the Environment and Energy.
