TOWARDS CO-CONSTRUCTION OF LOW-CARBON AND CLIMATE-RESILIENT DEVELOPMENT TRAJECTORIES

Senegal is in a dynamic of co-construction of low-carbon development trajectories that are resilient to climate change, through the “Deep Decarbonization Pathways in Senegal” initiative, Abdou Karim Sall, Minister of the Environment, declared Thursday. and Sustainable Development.

He co-signed with the director of the French Development Agency (AFD) in Dakar, Alexandre Pointier, a partnership agreement as part of the “Deep Decarbonization Pathways in Senegal” initiative.

This initiative is financed to the tune of 450 million CFA francs, as part of the 2050 Facility, set up by the AFD, during the One Planet Summit in December 2017, organized by France.

“This initiative is an innovative tool to support developing countries in their low-carbon development trajectory that is resilient to the effects of climate change,” the minister suggested.

He expressed his satisfaction at seeing Senegal appear on the list of beneficiary countries of this project, giving it the opportunity to study the ways and means of including its development trajectory by 2050 in carbon sobriety, in accordance with with the guidelines defined in the Paris Climate Agreement.

According to him, “Senegal, with the support of the Institute of Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI) and Enda Energie, will be able to have a low carbon strategy by 2050 as soon as possible, based on scientific evidence and the development priorities defined in the PSE”.

Abdou Karim Sall assured the DG of the AFD of the commitment of the Government of Senegal to work closely with their teams and those of the implementing partners to make this initiative “a great success”.

AFD, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD) and the Ministry of Oil and Energy, is collaborating with the Institute of International Relations and Sustainable Development (IDDRI) and Enda Energie to implement implemented in Senegal the Deep Decarbonization Pathways (DDP) initiative.

This initiative, financed by the AFD 2050 facility, “is based on a leading research network which brings together 36 countries”. It aims to “support states and non-state actors in defining strategies that will help guide economies and societies towards a carbon-neutral world by the second half of the century.”
